Abstract

Traffic accident is one of the most faced problems in the world right now, especially on highway. WHO reported around 1,3 million deaths caused by traffic accidents every year. All kinds of methods are used to prevent accidents caused by driver negligence. Nowadays, a lane departure warning system is used to tackle the problem. The system detects lane marking and will warn the driver if the car is not positioned correctly within the lane. Commonly used method to detect lane marking is edge detection, however it is not effective given the varying complexity of the road. The author of this research proposed a lane departure warning system using a camera, installed on the car’s dashboard, taking pictures of the road. The picture is then resized to 320 pixel × 180 pixel. To increase the accuracy of lane marking detection, convolutional neural network (CNN) with 3 layer convolutional layers is used. Detection results will be further processed to determine the type of warning to give to the driver, they are “steer a bit to the left/right” and “steer left/right”. To evaluate the model’s performance in detecting lane marking, root mean squared error (RMSE) is used. Result shows that deep learning is more effective than edge detection with RMSE of 0.0240 and 0.1177 respectively.
