Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most accurate body examination methods to obtain detailed images of organs, bones and tissues within the human body. It is then visualized into three cuts axial, coronal and sagittal. Medical image visualization is usually done in 3D. Processing 3D images on a graphics processing unit (GPU) usually causes problems due to the inability of the memory resources used so that crashes often occur during the training process or the image segmentation process performed. The problem can be handled by using a patching solution. The patching technique is to divide some parts of the 3D image into smaller parts. This technique makes it possible to train efficiently even though it uses a GPU with a small amount of resources. However, to reconstruct from the patching image into an image with the initial dimensions, an interpolation technique can be used. But the interpolation method produces a blurred image, especially on the smooth side, causing important information to be lost. Residual variational autoencoder super resolution is a neural network that can reconstruct 3D medical images from low resolution to high resolution. This method consists of 3 components namely encoder, decoder and latent vector. The encoder layer is used to perform feature extraction from low resolution images. Feature extraction performed by the encoder will produce a latent space that will be sampled randomly so that the mean and variance are obtained. Then reparamization is done so that backpropagation can be done so that it can estimate features to reconstruct to the initial image dimension in the decoder layer. The results show that the proposed residual variational autoencoder method outperforms state of the art methods such as variational autoencoder, multi-level densely connected super-resolution network, and interpolation. The structural similarity index measure and peak signal noise ratio metrics obtained are higher on both ADNI and local datasets for sigma 1 and 1.5. On average, the proposed method achieves structural similarity index measure improvement of about 5-10% and peak signal noise ratio improvement of about 10-15% when compared with the state of art method. Although the residual variational autoencoder model has a high evaluation metric value, there are several shortcomings including the reconstruction results from 32 x 32 x 32 to 256 x 256 x 256 causing artifacts or shapes such as box shadows on the reconstructed image.
