Abstract

Rapid investment casting is a production technique that combines additive manufacturing technology and casting technology with the goal of being able to make objects with complex shapes at relatively low production costs, as well as flexibility in making different shapes of objects without having to add additional costs. A popular metal used in industry Jewelry is a metal alloy of silver, gold or platinum. Silver is used because it is ductile and has a very shiny surface. Sterling Silver is an alloy with a minimum of 92.5% silver and 6-4% silver. In this study, sterling silver metal was poured into the flask using a centrifugal molding machine. The flask containing the previous investment molds is burned in an electric furnace and pre-heated. Sterling silver is poured at various temperaturs of 950℃, 1000℃ and 1050℃ and variations for pre-heat flask temperaturs are 550℃ and 600℃. Hardness testing, visual testing, metallographic testing, and Archimedes testing are carried out on the casting samples. The optimal temperatur variation to produce the lowest gas porosity is the preheat flask temperatur of 600 ˚C with a pouring temperatur of 1050 ˚C having a gas porosity value of 0.55%. The temperatur variation with the highest hardness value is the preheat flask temperatur of 550 ˚C with a pouring temperatur of 950 ˚C with a hardness value of 138.3 VHN. Variations with the smallest types of defects were observed in the preheat flask variations with two types of macro defects, namely sandy surface and hot tearing.
