Abstract

Down syndrome is a disorder of chromosome 21 that affects cognitive intellectual abilities. Down syndrome conditions affect cognitive, memory, and motor skills. Thus, the visual environment becomes important to be presented in educational facility buildings. The visual environment is presented to support activities that focus on the sense of sight in improving the user's cognition, memory and motor skills. Users in this building are people with Down syndrome who are vulnerable to productive age (adolescents). This design thesis uses a sensory design approach that explores the ability of visual perception of colors, patterns, materials, and light as supports. This design uses a force based framework method by looking for the characteristics of down syndrome users and the visual environment. The preferred forces are wayfinding (cognition), signs/marks (memory), accessibility (motor). Aspects of architecture that support the design include colors, patterns, materials, and light into a sensory stimulus that is given repeatedly. The design method applied is a method that responds to force including compositional arrangements related to mass and shape as well as designing spatial aspects for circulation, spatial quality, color, patterns, materials, and lighting. The result of the design is a wayfinding design to stimulate cognition and memory abilities by presenting middle ranges color aspects that apply earth tones, cool tones, and pastels. Mass order, circulation, and material aspects apply the principles of accessibility and a safe environment to respond to motor characteristics. The natural material aspects applied to the floor elements have a non-slippery and sharp surface texture for safe access. The natural materials used are rocks and exposed bricks. Simple geometric patterns are applied based on the gestalt principle, which is repetitive and symmetrical. The application of geometric patterns on the facade and the arrangement of building masses to help down syndrome users navigate when recognizing buildings and their surroundings. Natural features are applied in the form of vegetation and parks (inner court yard). The color aspect is applied to clarify navigation and signs to identify areas in the building through the atmosphere of space. Natural features are presented in the park as a medium for relaxation and interaction with the surrounding environment
