Abstract

In term of ensuring security and safety in ship operation, ship construction requires strong and light materials so the ship can carry more cargo. The application of sandwich materials in ship construction has the advantage of being able to reduce lightweight up to 15% and simplify the shape of ship construction. The application of sandwich plates to the ship's side hull structure has the risk of cracking due to repeated loading and occurs for a long time. However, the application of sandwich material to the ship hull has the challenge of identifying damage in preventing damage from occurring. Therefore, this study aims to develop a method of identifying sandwich material damage by analyzing the vibration response using the random decrement method. Vibration response data obtained from experiments that have been carried out by previous researchers and validated by the finite element method. Indications of damage occurring to the sandwich material can be seen when the random decrement signature changes in amplitude where the higher the amplitude generated, the higher the level of damage. The best accuracy of the random decrement method is obtained using trigger level crossing conditions with a value of 15 m/s2, where the highest amplitude value obtained is 15 m/s2 in intact condition, damage 1, damage 2 and 20 m/s2 in damage condition 3.
