Abstract

The synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) using the Ring Opening Polymerization (ROP) method has several stages such as dehydration, polycondensation, depolymerization, and polymerization (ROP). The dehydration stage is an important step in PLA synthesis with ROP, which aims to remove the water content in the lactic acid raw material. The water content in lactic acid can have an effect on the polymerization of PLA and have an impact on the properties of the resulting PLA. In order to maximize and make the dehydration process more efficient, ultrasonic technology is used in this study in the lactic acid dehydration stage. This study aims to obtain optimum conditions for ultrasonic dehydration using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) statistical analysis with time (minutes) and power rate (%) variables. In the polycondensation stage, the temperature is also varied to obtain the highest oligomer yield. In addition, the properties of PLA after ultrasonic and conventional dehydration were also compared in this study. Moisture content response variables were analyzed using the Karl Fisher instrument. Lactic acid obtained from the dehydration process at optimum conditions is then processed at the polycondensation, depolymerization, and ROP stages to produce PLA. The final PLA product was analyzed by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-NMR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The optimum dehydration process conditions were obtained with a time of 110.2 minutes and a power rate of 34.94% based on the minimum percent water content 1,4976%, with the final product PLA having a molecular weight of 40,567 g/mol, a percentage crystallinity of 60.0142%, and a melting temperature (Tm) of 145.32°C. Meanwhile, the best polycondensation temperature was obtained at a gradual temperature range of 150–180 °C with an oligomer yield of 69.7491%.
