Abstract
The study about the aesthetics of Nusantara Architecture is still limited compared to European Classic Architecture. Thus there is a necessity to find the wider scale to define what it is and how it is through European Classic Architecture’s point of view. This study concerns with this issue, and chooses Pura Batuan in Gianyar and Pura Beji in Buleleng as Balinese Pura case objects which have similarities to Baroque architecture in the abundance of ornamentations. This study uses Wolfflin’s Theory (Renaissance und Barock, 1888) as the primary guideline of Baroque Architecture, because Wolfflin explains about characteristics of style from the consideration of art history, without mentioning culture and social system. Between his categories about baroque style (which are painterly style, the grand style, massiveness and movement), we will find out which one has similar characteristics to Balinese Pura. To explain that matter, descriptive critic is applied as the main method. The reading leads this study into the aesthetic of profusion in Balinese Architecture. It can be used as one of argumentation whether Classic Architecture theory can be valid in immediately way for Nusantara Architecture or not. The result is providing some of discussion topics about what the meaning of Balinese ‘Baroque’ is and also its consequences to being called Balinese ‘Baroque’
