Abstract
Timber has an essential role in Balinese Architecture, more than just a construction material. In lontars of Balinese architecturewhich is considered as guidance of construction, the use of timber classified into levels and strata according to its quality. Timber was classified into categories and levels based on its value and quality. This study usesLontarAstaKosala-Kosali as the primary guideline of Balinese Architecture to explore the essential role of timber. The chosen LontarAstaKosala-Kosali is the copy of lontarwritten and inherited in GeriaSubangan which has been translated into Indonesian. Interpretative critic is applied as the main method to read the chosen lontarmore deeply. The reading leads this study into the meaning of wood in Balinese Architecture and clues of timber’s essential role as the main concept in architecture. Furthermore, it also leads this study into how important timber in intangible and intangible aspect of Balinese Architecture
