Abstract

Energy efficient architecture becomes a prime design concern in the last two decades. Design are forced to make the most use of natural resources in order to lower its energy requirements. One of the recomended strategy is incoporated daylight into building. Such strategy requires building to have direct contact with source of natural light outdoors through openings. Building layout, in this regard, plays an important role in determining daylighting performance of the building. Growing needs for low- to medium size houses in Indonesia in particular increase energy comcern. This relates to the fact that many of the houses are built in small plots which limit opportunity for the building to have natural light. As a consequence the house relays on artifial lighting for most of the time. The study employed experimental method to explore influence of disposition of building on daylighting condition in the building. Models of medium-size house were developed on the basis of existing building stock by housing developers in Surabaya and its surrounding areas. Computer simulation program was used to predict and analyse daylighting performance of the houses. The study shows that building layout in the medium-size houses has little influence on the daylighting performance. In the case where buildings are pushed to attached to plot's border, reduction in terms of daylight is observed.
