Abstract

Development of housing estate in major cities in Indonesia faces many environmental problems due to plot availability. Land scarcity and increased land price have forced developers to think more in promoting house design that is not only suffices basic user needs, healthy and tolerable environment, but also, most of all, affordable. Environmental problems such as lack of ventilation and daylight easily present in buildings constructed in limited plot. These problems in turn will affect energy budget of the house as well as occupant’s health and well being. The present study is designed to explore daylight conditions in two-storey houses in Surabaya as representing one of the largest city in warm-humid climate of Indonesia. By adopting simulation methods, the study analyzes daylight performance of the house and daylight distribution across spaces in the building. Daylight conditions in one particular type of house is analyzed and evaluated against variable of spatial organization or layout. On these two bases, daylight performance of the house and its relation to design variable are indicated. Results of the study found that daylight conditions in two-storey houses in Surabaya generally meet the daylight requirements for household activities. Daylight factors recorded in ground floor tend to be lower than those in the first floor. Spatial disposition of rooms is found to play a significant role in determining daylight conditions in the building
