Abstract

The function of cross ventilation for removing accumulated heat inside houses for humid tropical climate is difficult to cope, as the house has very limited area. This condition makes disadvantage for human being in doing their activities. The best range of temperature for Indonesian people in doing their activities is 25.4°C – 28.9°C.As a consequence, utilisation of fan and air conditioning is increasing. This condition subsequently raises amount of energy consumption of the building. Before performing computer simulations conducted field observations and measurements on sample objects. Observations and measurements used to derive; function space, system openings (windows / doors), spatial orientation of the main orientation occupancy and temperature conditions, wind velocity, air flow and humidity in the room. Simulation used CFD FLUENT 6.2 to generate data of the air aerodynamic and thermal performance in the house type 45 in a limited area in the humid tropics by modifying the sample object with optimization of window design. The result indicate that optimization of window design with 50% of the floor area with window type casement is most effective to reduce temperature and increase the wind velocity in the building . So with optimize the design of window, the functions of ventilation for the health and comfort of occupants in the building in the hot humid tropic climate can function and reduce energy use in buildings.
