Abstract

Water is an important element for human, animal and plant life. So, water resources often face a decrease in quality. One of the causes comes from excess organic matter which can become pollutants such as nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻). One effort that can be done in managing these pollutants is to use biofiltration. Biofiltration is a method of treating waste or pollutants biologically so that the pollutant content in an area is reduced. Biofiltration can be done using plants. One of them is Lakum Air (Ludwigia octovalvis). Therefore, this study aims to determine the ability of the Lakum Air plant (L. octovalvis) as a biofiltrator in absorbing the organic content of nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻). In its implementation, Lakum Air plants (L. octovalvis) were planted in water growing media with the addition of organic content in the form of nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻). The concentration added is the result of a preliminary test in the form of a Range Finding Test (RFT), which is 10 mg/L. From the research results obtained, the Lakum Air (L. octovalvis) as a biofiltrator for organic nitrate content (NO3-) has a removal efficiency of 0% for 2 weeks of contact time and 0.5% in 4 weeks of contact time. As a biofiltrator for the organic content of phosphate (PO₄³⁻) this plant has a removal efficiency of 35% with 2 weeks of contact time and 58% for 4 weeks of contact time. Lakum Air (L. octovalvis) plants were able to absorb nitrate (NO3-) of 2.99 mg/L in 2 weeks of contact and 5.92 mg/L in 4 weeks of contact. As well as being able to absorb phosphate (PO₄³⁻) as much as 4.72 mg/L with 2 weeks of contact time and 6.66 mg/L in 4 weeks of contact time. Lakum air plants (L. octovalvis) did not experience death and continued to show their growth productivity until the end of the observation period.
