Abstract

Purging control on the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) aims to avoid flooding due to water accumulation at the anode. This flooding leads to a decrease on the performance of the fuel cell, particularly the PEMFC stack voltage. Therefore, in this study the purging control system was designed by implementing several strategies, which includes purging intervals (10; 15; 20; 25 and 30 seconds) and purging time (0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; and 2.5 seconds), for various load current on an open cathode PEMFC with a capacity of 1 kW. The purging time of 0.5 seconds is chosen since it can maintain power stability as evidenced by the small voltage drop. Meanwhile, the optimal purging interval for this type of fuel cell is 15 seconds and 20 seconds. Purging intervals of 15 seconds are applied for load currents of 3 A, 5 A, while intervals of 20 seconds are applied for load currents of 1 A, 2 A, and 4 A. The implementation of this purging control affects the utilization of hydrogen in fuel cells where the wasted hydrogen energy is reduced compared to that before the purging control. In addition, purging control also improves the stack and system efficiency.
