Abstract

During its operating life, the mooring system of Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) is prone to fatigue due to continuously receiving cyclical environmental loads, mainly from waves. In addition to receiving cyclical loads from the environment, the mooring system also receives loads from the process of transferring cargo from FSO to tankers called as offloading. The offloading process can provide an additional force due to the motion of tankers which will have an impact on FSO motion and its mooring system. In general, offloading can be done in a tandem or side-by-side configuration. Because offloading continues to be carried out periodically while the FSO is in operation, this study will examine the effect of offloading with a tandem and side-by-side configuration on the fatigue life of the FSO mooring system. The analysis begins with a dynamic simulation for 3 hours according to the applicable standards to obtain the tension history of the mooring chain. Then proceed with calculating the tension range and the number of cycles from the tension history using the rainflow counting method and calculating the cumulative damage according to the miner's rule. Damage results in tandem and side-by-side configurations will then be weighted according to the chance of offloading. Assuming 5% offloading in a year, the reduction in mooring system life due to offloading is 0.06% for tandem and 5.3% for side-by-side.
