Abstract

Biomaterial berperan penting dalam pengobatan medis karena dirancang khusus untuk berinteraksi dan berintegrasi dengan sistem biologis manusia. Salah satu contohnya yaitu material komposit yang merupakan kombinasi dari dua atau lebih jenis bahan penyusun. Sampai saat ini komposit dengan matriks polimer telah banyak digunakan sebagai material implan tulang, salah satunya yaitu pada penggantian pinggul total. Implan ini biasanya terdiri atas acetabular cup, bola kepala, dan batang femoralis. Pada umumnya acetabular cup terdiri dari UHMWPE liner yang berada di dalam cup dari logam. Namun, UHMWPE murni dapat menimbulkan pelonggaran aseptik dan osteolisis yang membatasi umur implan sehingga membutuhkan penambahan material lain untuk meningkatkan kinerja mekanik. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan material komposit UHMWPE/PCL/HA dengan variasi rasio polycaprolactone dan hydroxyapatite sebesar 0 PCL : 13 HA, 3 PCL : 10 HA, 5 PCL : 8 HA, 8 PCL : 5 HA, 10 PCL : 3 HA, dan 13 PCL : 0 HA untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap sifat mekanik, morfologi, dan biokompatibilitas untuk aplikasi acetabular cup liner implant. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa variasi rasio penambahan polycaprolactone dan hydroxyapatite pada komposit UHMWPE/PCL/HA berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap sifat mekanik, morfologi, dan biokompatibilitas acetabular cup liner implant. Material yang kemungkinan mendekati paling sesuai untuk aplikasi acetabular cup liner implant yaitu komposit 87 UHMWPE : 0 PCL : 13 HA dengan nilai kekerasan sebesar 51.67 Shore D, Young’s modulus sebesar 6.86 MPa, tensile strength sebesar 2.54 MPa, dan viabilitas sel sebesar 95.97% serta komposit 87 UHMWPE : 5 PCL : 8 HA dengan nilai kekerasan sebesar 41.33 Shore D, Young’s modulus sebesar 7.90 MPa, tensile strength sebesar 1.18 MPa, dan viabilitas sel sebesar 87.53%.

Biomaterials play an important role in medical treatment because it is specifically designed to interact and integrate with the human biological system. One example is composite material which is a combination of two or more types of constituent materials. Until now, polymer matrix composites have been widely used as bone implant materials, one of which is total hip replacement. These implants usually consist of an acetabular cup, a femoral head, and a femoral stem. In general, the acetabular cup consists of an UHMWPE liner inside a metal cup. However, pure UHMWPE can cause aseptic loosening and osteolysis which limits the life of the implant, thus the addition of other materials to improve the mechanical performance might be able to overcome the problem. In this research, UHMWPE/PCL/HA were used with variations in the ratio of polycaprolactone and hydroxyapatite of 0 PCL : 13 HA, 3 PCL : 10 HA, 5 PCL : 8 HA, 8 PCL : 5 HA, 10 PCL : 3 HA, dan 13 PCL : 0 HA to find out how it affects the mechanical property, morphology, and biocompatibility for acetabular cup liner implant applications. The results showed that the ratio of the addition of polycaprolactone and hydroxyapatite to the UHMWPE/PCL/HA composite had a significant effect on the mechanical property, morphology, and biocompatibility of acetabular cup liner implant. The material that is likely to be the most suitable for acetabular cup liner implant is the 87 UHMWPE : 0 PCL : 13 HA composite which has a hardness of 51.67 Shore D, Young’s modulus of 6.86 MPa, tensile strength of 2.54 MPa, cell viability of 95.97%, and 87 UHMWPE : 5 PCL : 8 HA composite which has a hardness of 41.33 Shore D, Young’s modulus of 7.90 MPa, tensile strength of 1.18 MPa, cell viability of 87.53%.
