Abstract

This study aims to determine the best soil resistance value to be used as grounding by effectively treating the soil with the addition of additives using bentonite and wood charcoal around the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Surabaya. The Earth Resistance Tester with the 3-point method and copper rod electrodes with a diameter of 15.875 mm were used for measurement. The researchers used different experimental variables, namely the addition of additive compositions by 25%, 50%, and 75% to the soil volume with different positions of the additive at a depth of 40 cm from the rod electrode. The use of soil treatments with bentonite and wood charcoal additives can reduce soil resistance values. The position and composition of the additive influence the results, with the best results obtained using bentonite at position 2 and 75% composition resulting in a resistance value of 87.29 Ω, and crushed wood charcoal at position 3 and 75% composition resulting in a resistance value of 115.85 Ω. The placement position of the additive also affects the results for positions 1, 2, and 3. The density of the additive also affects the reduction in soil resistance values, and the best results depend on the position and type of additive used. Bentonite has a higher density compared to wood charcoal, requiring more vertical addition of wood charcoal to achieve the same results.
