Abstract

Pacitan waters in East Java have potential energy for ocean currents because they have an average current speed of 0.5 m/s. This condition can assist Indonesia in pursuing the NRE national energy generation target of 51.6% (20,932 MW) of electricity per year. This research explores the phenomenon of ocean currents due to breaking waves at the location so that it can be utilised for energy generation. Furthermore, analysing the characteristics of the pattern of ocean currents due to breaking waves at several points in one perpendicular line (Y axis) to the coastline is carried out. Then, some of the best locations for laying the structure are determined. In this case, the structure used is an empty duct, a component covering the turbine. Furthermore, a flow rate analysis of the impact of changing the position of the duct in several previous locations was carried out. The methods begin with collecting and processing field data. Then proceed with numerical modelling using Aquaveo SMS to identify the characteristics of ocean current patterns. After MAPE validation, seven observation points were selected to analyse the pattern of ocean currents. These seven points were then determined using previous research criteria to become three points for further modelling. The second modelling was performed with DualSPHysics to identify the flow rates of the three ducts before entering the structure, inside the structure, and after passing through the structure in three variations. Variations are selected based on differences in location at the three previous selection points. The modelling results of these three variations show that Variation 1 is the most optimal choice for duct installation since it has 40% feasible ocean currents inside the duct.
