Abstract

Surabaya is the second most populous city in Indonesia after Jakarta. This led to a high number of motorized vehicles being used, both private vehicles and public vehicles. As the number of vehicles increases, the level of air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust gases also increases. The contribution of motor vehicle exhaust gases as a source of air pollution reaches 60-70% of the total exhaust gases produced from combustion activities. One of the emissions produced from exhaust gases is Lead (Pb). Pb particles resulting from motor vehicle activity come from the combustion of additives used as a mixture of gasoline consisting of Tetraethyl Lead (TEL) and Tetramethyl Lead (TML). High concentrations of Pb can have adverse effects on human, animal, and plant health as well as a decrease in environmental quality. Tabebuia (Tabebuia sp.) and Trembesi (Samanea saman) is one the most planted vegetation in urban parks.
This study aims to determine the content of Pb, the correlation of motor vehicle activity to the content of Pb, and the correlation of the type of city park to the content of Pb in Tabebuia (Tabebuia sp.) and Trembesi (Samanea saman). Sampling is carried out in South Surabaya and East Surabaya as the areas with the highest number of motorized vehicles in Surabaya. This research includes observational research that uses data analysis with descriptive and quantitative methods. This research will be from January to July 2023. Pb content was analyzed using the wet destructive method and ICP measurement.
This research was conducted to find out how is the efficiency of Tabebuia sp. and Samanea saman in absorbing Pb concentration from vehicle exhaust gases and what is the effect of the location of the urban park type on the absorption of Pb from vehicle exhaust gases. The results of the study showed that Tabebuia sp. can absorb lead concentrations of 121.4 – 171.7 mg/kg and for Samanea saman of 90.9 – 138.3 mg/kg. Meanwhile, the location of the urban park type does not significantly affect the amount of absorption of Pb from vehicle exhaust gases.
