Abstract

One issue that must be addressed, particularly in Indonesia, is solid waste (SW). This occurs because of the interaction between people and SW. Basically, the volume of generation and composition of SW can be impacted by population increase and product use. The environment will be negatively impacted by the rise in SW creation and the variety of SW components, beginning with soil, water, and air pollution. As a result, the production of containers and their collection must consider the amount of SW in the intended planning area. One of the biggest commercial areas in Surabaya is along Mulyosari street. Aims of this study are: (a) to investigate the current SW generation rate and composition in study area, (b) to evaluate existing SW management condition in study area and (c) to design the SW containment and placement in study area. Samples were taken for 8 days in accordance with SNI 19-3964-1994 for SW generation and composition measurement. Sampling was carried out according to the operating hours imposed on each facility. Initial observations revealed the various types of businesses along Mulyosari street, 245 traders which could be classified into 16 groups. Secondary data collection was obtained from journals, previous research, books, government data, map, etc. The secondary data which were collected in this research were: SW density, regulation concerning of SW containment, total number of facilities (Stores, Supermarkets, and others). The existing condition of SW management in the study area was held by direct observation. The highest SW generator was supermarket with the average generation rate of 125.7 kg/day. Fast food restaurants were the second highest SW generator (11.2 kg/day). Whereas the lowest SW generator (1.4 kg/day) is toy shop. The current SW containment and collection did not comply with SNI 19-2454-2002 and the Decree of the Minister of Public Works of the Republic of Indonesia Number 3 of 2013. Design of SW containment in the study area use 2-4 containers for each zone with a capacity of 240 L. There were 59 zones in the study area with 50 m distance between the containers. The containers comprised green color for biodegradable waste and yellow color for recyclable waste. Design of SW collection using 4 crew and 2 carts. It was designed using the SCS system. For monthly payments, there were 3 categories. The total monthly payments in category 1 is 46,459.61 rupiah, for category 2 is 166,593.45 rupiah, for category 3 is 1,763,435.51 rupiah
