Abstract

Solar energy is one of the reliable, clean, environmentally friendly, and inexhaustible sources of renewable energy. Photovoltaics (PV) is one of the renewable energy technologies that is gaining popularity due to its ability to generate electricity from sunlight without producing harmful emissions or consuming fuel. PV operates at the Maximum Power Point (MPP), which is the point where the electric power produced by the solar panel reaches its maximum value. The issue that arises with the use of PV (Photovoltaic) is that its output power does not always operate at the MPP, resulting in suboptimal solar energy utilization. This is due to the non-linear I-V (current-voltage) characteristics of PV, which are influenced by factors such as light intensity and ambient temperature. In the utilization of solar panels, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) becomes the solution used to enhance the effectiveness of energy harvesting using PV. The design of the MPP system for a 240-watt peak photovoltaic power generated in an ad hoc manner due to the mismatch of irradiance and temperature with the Standard Condition Test (STC) is presented in this research. Therefore, in this study, the maximum power is sought using the Secant method with reference to the ΔP/ΔV (power change per voltage change) characteristic curve of the photovoltaic panel. The value of the maximum peak power is obtained when ΔP/ΔV=0, and the Secant method is employed to find the voltage at which the maximum power occurs at any given time. In the MPPT system testing, a comparison is made with the scenarios without MPPT, MPPT using the Perturb and Observe (PnO) method, MPPT using the Firefly method, and MPPT using the Secant method. The results of the simulation testing show that the Secant MPPT method achieves the highest average efficiency of 97.85%, which is superior to both scenarios without MPPT and with other MPPT methods. The Secant MPPT also has a better average tracking time of 0.450 seconds. The resulting power ripple is also small or even close to zero under steady-state conditions.
