Abstract

Alternative energy sources to substitute fossil-based energy
is expected, as the fossil energy reserves decreasing every day.
Mud is considered to be economical as the material sources for
producing the electricity where it could be found easily and
abundantly in Indonesia. The existence of a lot of mud that
contains organic material has great potential as a source of
electrical energy using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Microbial
fuel cells (MFCs) are devices that use bacteria as the catalysts to
oxidize organic and inorganic matter with anaerobic process for
generating bioelectrocity. Electrons produced by the bacteria from
these substrates are transferred to the anode and followed to the
cathode linked by a conductive material containing a resistor. It
provides a promising technology by degrading organic
compounds to yield the sustainable energy.
The purpose of this research is to study the potential for
electrical energy generated from the use of mud from soil water,
brackish water, sea water 1 (Tambak Wedi) and sea water 2
(mangrove Kenjeran) then to determine the ability of electrode
material i.e Ni and Ti in delivering electrical energy and the effect
of supplemented nutrients. The power potential (voltage and
electric current) will be measured by preparing tool series and
multitester connected to the anode and cathode with connectors
and the series of resistor.

The results suggest that the electricity generation of the
four areas are 212, 267, 280 and 320 Volt/m2 (in terms of voltage);
0,21, 0,27, 0,28 and 0,32 A/m2 (in terms of electric current),
respectively. It is investigated that the mud obtained the sea water
2 or mangrove Kenjeran exhibits the highest power potential
compared to that obtained from the brackish and soil water.
Electrode Ti 100 mesh and addition of nutrient MM + Y are the
best electrodes and nutrients to achieve the highest potential
bioelectricity.
