Abstract

Preliminary investigation has been done in order to study the effect of modication of precipitation hardening T6 on the hardness and microstructure of Al-Si-Mg alloy .The modification was carried out by means of shortening the duration of solution treatment. The alloy was heated at 540°C, 550°C and 560°C in a salt bath furnace containing mixture of salts. The solution time was set to 30, 60, 90 minutes. Afterwards, the alloy was subjected to artificial aging in a muffle furnace at 150°C for 2 hours. Hardness test and microstructural investigation was carried out in order to investigate the effect of the short solution treatment. Results showed that the hardness of the heat treated specimen tends to be lower than those of ascast.
The tendency may arise from grain coarsening phenomenon that occured during heat treatment. Moreover,
microstructure analysis showed that the heat treatment did not cause transformation of the Al-Si eutectic particles. Hence, it could be predicted that the Mg and Si only dissolved in small quantity.
