Abstract

In foreign object implantation into the body, there’s a huge risk called foreign body related infection (FBRIs). It’s due to the bacterial adhesion on the implant surface and colonized to form biofilm resulting infection. Although several medical sterilization steps has been performed, FBRIs case still happened. One of the technology used to prevent infection is antimicrobial coating. Silver implementation on the surface is one of the rapidly growing research in terms of antimicrobial coating. In this research, silver were deposited on the surface of 316 L stainless steel substrate. Silver metal were deposited using Physical Vapor Deposition:Radio Frequency Sputtering (PVD RF Sputtering) method to fabricate silver thin film. These coatings were deposited with different deposition time variables for 10, 15, 20 minutes and argon gas pressure variables 3x10-2, 4x10-2, 5x10-2 mbar. In this research, the material were tested using SEM-EDX, AFM, Kirby Bauer Test, and Rockwell C Indentation Test. Time deposition and argon gas pressure increase in PVD process resulting thicker coating and higher silver content on the surface with highest value 97.55 wt% in 5x10-2 mbar of argon pressure with 15 minutes of deposition time. Longer deposition time increase surface roughness while higher argon pressure decrease surface rougness. Kirby-Bauer Test proved that all the samples were contain antimicrobial properties and qualitatively using Rockwell C Indentation shows good adhesion of silver thin film. These result shows that silver thin film has a huge potential as antimicrobial coating.
