Abstract

High cholesterol in blood may lead to vascular constriction (atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis can stimulate other diseases, such as coronary vascular disease (CVD), stroke, and can even cause death. Early detection of cholesterol rising level is needed to prevent atherosclerosis. One of the optical-based methods for non-invasive or minimally invasive cholesterol measurement is Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), which utilizes the occurrence of diffuse reflections on the surface of the test object. The purpose of this research is to build and test the technique of measuring cholesterol level using DRS technique. Measurements are made in liquid phantom (which represents the optical parameter values of the skin tissue: i.e. the absorption coefficient and the scattering coefficient). This phantom is made from an intralipid mixture by varying several concentration value of of cholesterol solution, which is prepared by dissolving pure cholesterol powder with ethanol solvent. Based on the tests done, a good correlation between phantom absorption coefficient and cholesterol levels has been obtained for measurement of cholesterol levels in phantom using Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy at a range of 2.752 cm-1 to 3.57 cm-1 with accuracy of 93%, and the precision of 0,96% .
