Abstract

=================================================================
Even if some people were willing to concede that motorcycles can be artworks, many would be unwilling to place them ‘up there’ with other more conventional art forms (Craig, B. 2007). Kustomfest is an international festival held in Jogja from 8th – 9th October 2016. Total of 22.000 visitors, 20.500 locals and 1.500 foreigners, come and appriciate 132 custom motorcycles and 17 custom cars.
Most custom motorcycles use old engines as the vehicle basis, such as Kawasaki Binter Merzy or Yamaha Scorpio Z. Yamaha Scorpio Z is first marketed in Indonesia in 2006. Yamaha Scorpio Z is commonly in a bad condition and visually unpleasant. In this project, Yamaha Scorpio Z is customized in the genre of Cafe Racer. The design is expected to create its own image visually, and adds value to the motorcycle.
The design process starts from collecting literature data and observing fields using planned methods. These methods include story-telling, card-sorting, and affinty diagram. The observation result is then processed and contain a simple concept to answer the corresponding design concept.
The Cafe Racer concept is modern. Streamline, speed and power and less fanciful are the keywords in the implementation of the design concept, and is expected to be able to answer the styling required for the national and International Festival, specific motorcycle events with the consideration of material factors, production process and operational ergonomics.
