Abstract

An arcing phenomenon in a low voltage system is one of the main causes of fire incidents that occur quite frequently on many countries in the world. An arcing that occurs on a low voltage system if repeatedly occured for a period of time in a supporting condition, the heat generated could combust any materials near it and starts a fire. The fault current that is caused by the arcing generally has a very short duration, causing any conventional electrical safety equipments like the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) and fuse will not be able to detect and isolate the fault. Series arcing, besides it has a very short duration, its fault current level is also in a level of a normal operating current, and that makes it impossible for any overcurrent safety equipments to detect any fault in the circuit.
In this research a design of an online web based series arcing detection equipment system is explained, including the analysis of line impedance on the detection performance. The method of the arc detection is done by peak thresholding and peak counting of the current signal, that is processed before by a digital high pass filter inside the LabVIEW application. The algorithm used in the detection system is designed to be able to differentiate 3 common conditions in a circuit, namely normal condition, switching, and when series arcing condition occur based on its high frequency current waveform characteristics. Then, the LabVIEW program is designed to be able to communicate with a MySQL database that is located on a webhost server in the internet network by sending arcing detection log, so the arcing detection could be monitored from anywhere and anytime by the user.
