Abstract

Expansion loop are built in pipes to allow for deflection of the pipes and to prevent bending. However, a change of the pipes’ internal flow can cause turbulence of the fluid flow which creates stress on the pipes. The stress analysis is conducted to figure out whether the stress that occurs at L, U, Z elbow 90o and 45o expansion loop types with various additional arm lengths are still below safety limits. The flow pattern and velocity are obtained from ANSYS Multiphysics software, while the stress combination (Von – Mises) and deflection values are obtained with the AutoPipe software. The results of the analysis show that the flow pattern in all the expansion loop variations are turbulent. The stress that occurs in each variation are still below the safety limit based on ASME B31.8 which is a von – mises stress of 405 MPa.
