Abstract

==========================================================================================================
The development of the automotive industry at this time prioritizes safety and comfort in driving. One of the main factors in supporting safety and comfort in driving is the suspension system. The suspension system often creates a problem of excessive vibration. This vibration if not anticipated it will cause failure on the machine, reduced levels of security on the car and feelings of uncomfortable passengers. Suspension systems in vehicles today mostly use hydraulic shock absorber because it has high reliability, low maintenance budget, easy installation and maintenance, and has a cheaper price. But on the other hand, pneumatic type shock absorber has some advantages that is not easily damaged due to shock load and more secure because it is not flammable like hydraulic system. With some of the advantages and disadvantages, then the research on Atmospheric Pressure Shock Absorber (APSA) which aims to create a simple shock absorber and utilize atmospheric air, then can provide the same or better performance than existing shock absorber at a cheaper price and easier maintenance.
In this final project will be simulation and experiment of Atmospheric Pressure Shock Absorber (APSA) system at one quarter of vehicle. In this final project will be simulated by using MATLAB Simulink software. APSA is simulated to obtain damping force and parameter data required in tool making. After obtaining the required parameters, APSA system is manufactured and tested on the Daihatsu Gran Max transport vehicle. Tests on transport vehicles will be conducted during the day with variations of speed 10 km/h, 15 km/h, and 20 km/h during bump testing and variations of speed 30 km/h, 40 km/h, and 50 km/h on when uneven road testing.
The results obtained from this final task that is the characteristics of damping force and acceleration response for conventional shock absorber and APSA. Characteristics of APSA damping force with an orifice diameter of 1 mm obtained from simulation results, that is 2403 N at 10 km/h speed, 3470 N at 15 km/h, 4723 N at 20 km/h, 6584 N at 30 km/h, 1.185x104 N at 40 km/h, and 1.858x104 N at 50 km/h. The higher the speed of the vehicle, the greater the resulting damping force. Maximum acceleration response of APSA with orifice diameter of 1 mm obtained from the test result, that is 0.0101 m/s2 at a speed of 10 km/h, 0.0146 m/s2 at 15 km/h, 0.0301 m/s2 at 20 km/h. The RMS APSA acceleration response obtained from the test result is 0.0117 m/s2 at a speed of 30 km/h and 0.0175 m/s2 at 40 km/h. The higher the speed of the vehicle, the greater the maximum acceleration and RMS response. Characteristics of APSA damping force with orifice diameter of 1 mm has the greatest damping force compared with conventional shock absorber and APSA with orifice diameter of 1 mm. Maximum acceleration response and RMS APSA with orifice diameter of 1 mm have the smallest acceleration response compared with conventional shock absorber and APSA with orifice diameter of 2 mm. The larger the resulting damping force, the smaller the acceleration response at the same vehicle speed.
