Abstract

Baja SM490 merupakan jenis baja karbon rendah yang digunakan di industri perkereta-apian. Baja ini digunakan oleh PT. INKA untuk membuat underframe kereta api. Pembuatan underframe menggunakan baja SM490 dikarenakan baja ini mengandung karbon rendah sehingga mudah dibentuk. Baja karbon rendah memiliki sifat mekanik yang getas. Sehingga diperlukan perlakuan panas untuk merubah sifat mekaniknya agar lebih keras dan tangguh.
Metodologi yang dilakukan meliputi persiapan benda uji, uji laku panas Hardening dengan temperatur 900˚C, media pendingin air dilanjutkan Tempering dengan variasi suhu 400˚C, 600˚C dan 800˚C. Kemudian di tempa sebanyak 20 kali lalu didinginkan dengan campuran air (80%) dan garam (20%). Kemudian uji metalografi, uji kekerasan dan uji impak..
Hasil penelitian ini pada uji metalografi, suhu 800˚C memiliki martensit temper paling sedikit. Saat uji kekerasan pada suhu 800ᵒC memiliki kekerasan 85,16 HRB. Dan hasil pengujian impak 600ᵒC mempunyai kekuatan impak sebesar 7,7529 Joule/mm2.

SM490 steel is a type of low carbon steel used in the railway industry. This steel is used by PT. INKA to create rail underframe. Making underframe using steel SM490 because of this steel contain low carbon so easily formed. The low carbon steel has a brittle mechanical properties. So that required heat treatment to change the mechanical propertis to be more hard and tough.
The methodology involved includes the preparation of test specimens, Hardening heat-conducting test with a temperature of 900˚C, water cooling medium followed by Tempering with variations of Temperature 400˚C, 600˚C and 800˚C. Then forged as much as 20 times then cooled with a mixture of water (80%) and salt (20%). Then metallographic test, hardness test and impact test.
The results of this study on metallographic tests, the temperature of 800˚C has the least amount of martensite. When the hardness test at 800ᵒC has the hardness of 85.16 HRB. And the result of 600ᵒC impact test has a impact strength of 7.7529 Joule / mm2.
