Abstract

======================================================================================================================== SPAR (Single Point Anchor Reservoir) is one of the floating structures for offshore oil and gas exploitation. In the development of SPAR hull mounted helical strakes to reduce the movement response due to wave and current forces. This Final Project examines the effect of strakes configuration on fluid flow with the CFD method and the motion response of SPAR using ANSYS software. The SPAR moored condition is varied in its helical strakes configuration (number of strakes (1 strake, 2 strakes, 3 strakes), 3.2D height of pitch, and gap (0.05D to 0.12D)) to determine its effect on fluid flow and motion response on the SPAR as well as the correlation of both to obtain the most optimal helical strakes configuration. The flow under consideration relates to the formation of vortex shedding, while the observed motions are Surge, Heave, Pitch and yaw at 5-40 sec. It is found that the flow is getting irregular as the addition of helical strakes causes the frequency of vortex shedding to become smaller. The influence of the addition of helical strakes also reduces the response of SPAR movements to be more stable, and the most stable movement occurs in SPAR variation 3 with number of strakes 3, height of pitch 3.2D, and 0,0625D gap. The study also found that the smaller the frequency of vortex shedding, make the smaller motion.
