Abstract

Friction stir welding is a welding process that can produce high quality connections at a low cost because it does not use filler as a heat input. This process gets the heat input from the rotating tool pressure so that heat is generated due to friction on the workpiece. In friction stir welding, heat is one of the important parameters that determine the quality of the welded material. The higher the heat, the more perfect the melting of the metal occurs, thus affecting the welding density. The maximum temperature generated in the FSW process ranges from 70 to 90% of the melting temperature of the welded material.
In this study, the influence and optimization based on the variation of process parameter to the maximum temperature that occured at the end point of the friction stir welding area has been done using process parameters such as rotation speed (N), welding speed (V) and pressure tool (P). The simulation is done using ANSYS workbench 18.1 software. Materials used are aluminum alloy for plate and structural steel for tool. The design and optimization of the results of the simulation using the taguchi method, and to predict a significant level of influence in generating the maximum temperature using minitab 18 software.
From the research results, obtained if the higher the value of the process parameter rotation speed, welding speed and tool pressure then the resulting temperature will be higher. Based on the taguchi method, pressure is the process parameter having the most significant effect on the maximum temperature produced. Optimum temperature values obtained by setting the value of process parameters N = 30 Rpm, V = 420 mm/s and P = 320 Mpa.
