Abstract

Danube is the second longest river in Europe after the Volga. Danube River Basin extends into the territories of 19 contries in Europe. In this study, an analysis is conducted to determine factors affecting biomass of phytoplankton in Danube River. Some factors that might affect biomass of phytoplankton are nutrients concentration (e.g. nitrogen and phosphorus), acidity (pH), conductivity, and temperature of river water. In the previous studies, chlorophyll-α biomass was used as an indicator of phytoplankton biomass, hence chlorophyll-α biomass is used as response variable in this study. According to distribution test, phytoplankton klorofil-α biomass in Danube River Basin follows gamma distribution and lognormal distribution. Therefore, gamma regression and lognormal regression can be used to analyse factors affecting chlorophyll-α biomass in Danube River Basin, Europe. The AICc value of the models show that gamma regression model has better performance in this case than lognormal regression model. Parameter significance test of gamma regression model shows that temperature and acidity (pH) of river water significantly affect chlorophyll-α biomass in Danube River Basin. According to regression coefficient, the greater value of temperature and acidity, the value chlorophyll-α biomass will be larger.
