Abstract

Kaolin adalah jenis tanah liat yang digolongkan sebagai limbah yang mengandung silika ± 50%. Secara umum, kaolin dapat digunakan sebagai sumber yang ekonomis untuk sintesis material mikropori seperti zeolit. Pada penelitian ini, kaolin Bangka Belitung digunakan sebagai sumber silika dan alumina untuk sintesis zeolit Y dalam bentuk Na (NaY) secara langsung. Zeolit disintesis melalui 2 tahap yaitu pembuatan seed gel dan feedstock gel, kemudian keduanya dicampurkan membentuk overall gel yang diperam selama 24 jam pada suhu ruang dan dikristalisasi selama 12 jam pada 105 °C. Zeolit NaY hasil sintesis dikarakterisasi dengan XRD, terbentuk fasa utama zeolit Y dengan sedikit kaolin yang belum bereaksi dan fasa zeolit P. Sebelum digunakan sebagai katalis, dilakukan pertukaran kation zeolit NaY menjadi HY. Zeolit HY digunakan sebagai katalis dalam reaksi esterifikasi asam asetat (AA) dan benzil alkohol (BA) dengan rasio molar 1:4 (AA:BA), loading katalis 2,5%wt dan menggunakan autoklaf sebagai reaktor. Konversi AA (%) dihitung melalui metode titrasi, hasil konversi berbanding lurus dengan pertambahan waktu dan suhu reaksi, didapatkan konversi AA tertinggi sebesar 97,97% pada 225 °C selama 8 jam, sedangkan konversi BA (%) dihitung berdasarkan hasil GC, konversi BA juga berbanding lurus dengan pertambahan suhu reaksi. Berdasarkan hasil GC, konversi BA (%) tertinggi menggunakan katalis HY mencapai 60,45% pada 225 °C.

Kaolin, which is often considered as a waste contains approximately 50% silica. In general, kaolin can be used as a more economical source for synthesis microporous materials such as zeolites. In this work, Bangka Belitung kaolin was used as a silica source for the direct synthesis of zeolite Y in sodium form (NaY). The zeolite was obtained from a two-step synthetic route in which the seed gel and feedstock gel were mixed formed overall gel then it aged for 24 h at room temperature and crystallized for 12 h at 105 °C. NaY zeolite characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) contained major phase of NaY with small amount of kaolin and zeolite P were also observed. The cation exchange of NaY to HY was performed before the catalytic activity test. The HY zeolite performance on esterification of acetic acid (AA) with benzyl alcohol (BA) would be investigated with molar ratio of 1:4 (AA:BA), 2.5% loading catalyst using autoclave as a reactor. In this case, AA conversion (%) was obtained from titration method, the conversion would increase with increasing in reaction time and temperature, the highest AA conversion is 97,97% for 8h at 225 °C reaction condition, while BA conversion (%) was obtained from GC, the conversion would increase with increasing in temperature reaction. Based on GC result, the higest BA conversion over zeolite HY was 60,45% at 225 C reaction condition.
