Abstract

• Investasi : $697.895.336,38
• Internal Rate of Return : 34,92%
• POT : 5,7 tahun
• BEP : 44,557 %
• Project Life : 20 tahun
================================================================================================
The level of coal production in 2016 amounted to 456,042,287 tonnes. Indonesian coal resources are currently at 104.94 billion tonnes and reserves of 21.13 billion tons. With such a large potential, the future challenges is to seek a balance between the strategy to make coal important as the primary energy economical for production activities in Indonesia and change the conventional thinking way that see coals only as a state revenue (ESDM, 2014). In addition to sizable reserves, coal gasification can also utilize lignite numbering in Indonesia reached 70% (Directorate General of Oil and Gas, 2012). Other advantages, coal gasification is not risky, but also odorless and environmentally friendly.
South Sumatra is one of the areas that have the largest coal reserves in Indonesia. Based on data from the Center for Geological Resources, reserves of low-grade coal in South Sumatra, as much as 2,426 million tonnes.
Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases with similar properties as natural gas that can be produced from the gasification of the raw material such as coal or biomass. Gasification is the process of changing raw material solid to gas (syngas). Syngas which has the main content of CO and H2 then converted into SNG that mainly consist of methane (CH4) through metanation process to produce primary products such as CH4 and water as byproduct. In the form of gas, the potential of this energy will be more easily channeled and used for energy source in another process to replace natural gas feedstock.
Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, estimated value of supply in 2020 reached 7919.2 MMSCFD. While the estimated value of demand in 2020 reached 12074.6 MMSCFD. Of the forecast data is concluded that to meet the needs of natural gas in 2020 required an additional supply of natural gas amounted to 4155.4 MMSCFD. SNG plant is expected to meet the needs of Indonesian natural gas by 3%, so that this plant is planned to operate with a production capacity of 120 MMSCFD assuming 330 days of production.
Locations planned of coal gasification plant is established in South Sumatra which is the source of the largest coal reserves in Indonesia. The selected area is the area of Tanjung Enim, Muara Enim, South Sumatra. The choice of location because it is situated not too far from PT Bukit Asam as the largest producer of coal in the district. Muara Enim would facilitate the supply of coal as plant raw material. Also, the potential of hydropower, electricity and transportation in South Sumatra is also quite adequate, so it is not too difficult to set up factories in the region.
SNG from coal manufacturing process consists of four main processes, namely coal preparation, gasification, gas cleaning, and methanation. Raw materials used for these SNG plant is a coal taken from PT. Bukit Asam BA59 Type. Before getting into the gasification process, coal undergo size reduction of the size of the 2.5-in into 6-50 mm to be pulverized coal. After that, pulverized coal inserted into a screen to separate sizes low rank coal with over spec coal which is then further processed into syngas in a gasifier reactor.
At stage of gasification, coal from bin pulverized coal enter the gasifier that is equipped with a lock hopper to raise pulverized coal pressure from atmospheric pressure (1 bar) to 30 bar. The increase is intended that the pressure of coal in accordance with the gasifier pressure. Oxidizing agents such as O2 and steam is passed through the bottom of the coal gasifier and then contact with the oxidizer as it moves upward. Gasifier occurred on a wide range of reactions which is divided into three zones: the devolatilization, combustion zone and gasification zone. Initially, the coal will undergo devolatilization process for coal chemical decomposition with the aid of heat coming from the steam injected into the gasifier and conditions oxygenated environment. The results of the devolatilization are carbon, ash, and light gases.
Syngas still contains various impurities compounds, such as H2S, COS, and CO2. Then into the reactor WGS and COS Hydrolysis to obtain syngas composition with a ratio of CO: H2 of 1: 3. Also, compound COS is hydrolyzed to form H2S. The conversion objective is to make MDEA as absorbent, absorb H2S selectively than COS. The presence of these compounds (H2S and CO2) can cause corrosive to equipment and damaging the catalyst that needs to be purified first.
Furthermore, the syngas is fed to the absorber column and contacted with MDEA solution to separate the CO2 and H2S gas. Rich amine then circullated back to the desorber for regenerating the solvent MDEA. Stripper column operates with a partial condenser and partial reboiler. Lean amine out of the bottom reboiler and then pumped back to the pump leading to the absorber. Desorber top condenser flow consist of mainly CO2 and H2S. While Syngas coming out of the absorber is supplied to the methanator. In methanation process, a gas mixture of CO and H2 will be entered in a fixed-bed reactor using a catalyst such as nickel (Ni). Methanation reaction takes place at three reactors that are installed in series. The products coming out of third methanator still contain large H2O content that needs to separated.
Source of investment funds come from 20% of its own capital investment costs and short-term loans amounted to 80% of investment costs with interest at 12% per year. From the analysis of economic calculation, following results are obtained :
• Investation : $ 697,895,336.38
• Internal Rate of Return: 34.92%
• POT: 5.7 years
• BEP: 44.557%
• Project Life: 20 years
In summary, the average % of IRR still shows that the SNG plant from low rank coal is feasible to set up.
