Abstract

Turbin angin Savonius pertama kali diperkenalkan oleh insinyur Finlandia Sigurd J. Savonius pada tahun 1922. Turbin ini menggunakan sudu berbentuk setengah silinder yang sering dinamakan bucket dirangkai sehingga penampangnya membentuk “S”. Turbin ini terlihat berbentuk satu sisi setengah silinder terdiri dari sisi konkav dan sisi konvex. Turbin ini merupakan salah satu jenis Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) yang menggunakan perbedaan gaya drag antara kedua bucket untuk dapat memutar rotornya, oleh karena itu rotor ini memiliki kemampuan untuk self starting yang tidak dimiliki turbin-turbin angin lainnya, walaupun begitu performa turbin angin Savonius masih relatif rendah sehingga sampai sekarang belum dapat diaplikasikan, telah dilakukan banyak penelitian untuk dapat meningkatkan performa, beberapa cara itu antara lain dengan menambahkan shielding, end plate, mengubah bentuk sudu, gap overlap, dan lainnya.
Analisis pada penelitian tugas akhir ini meliputi perbandingan performa turbin angin Savonius konvensional dan turbin angin Savonius berbentuk eliptik dengan diasumsikan aliran 2D steady flow dan menggunakan turbulent viscous transisi k-kl omega dan k-ω SST dengan variasi kecepatan aliran dan sudut datang aliran terhadap posisi rotor turbin Savonius. Penelitian ini akan dievaluasi melalui koefisien torsi statis, terhadap posisi rotor turbin Savonius, distribusi tekanan sepanjang permukaan blade dan karakteristik aliran angin dekat rotor. Studi numerik yang dibantu menggunakan software Ansys Workbench 18. Hasil dari penelitan menunjukkan bahwa rotor turbin angin modifikasi memilik koefisien torsi statis lebih tinggi pada kecepatan rendah. Kedua jenis rotor turbin mempunyai kemampuan self-starting relatif sama pada kecepatan tinggi

The Savonius wind turbine was first introduced by Finnish engineer Sigurd J. Savonius in 1922. This turbine uses a semi-cylindrical blade that is often called a bucket. The bucket strung so that its cross-section forms "S". The shape forms one half cylinder side consists of a concave side and the other side is convex. This turbine is one type of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) that uses a drag force difference between the two buckets to be able to rotate the rotor, therefore this rotor has the ability for self-starting that other wind turbines do not have. Even though the performance of the wind turbine Savonius is still relatively low so that until now it has not been applied, many studies have been conducted to be able to improve performance, some of which include adding shielding, end plates, changing blade shapes, overlapping gaps, and others innovation that may improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the rotor.
The analysis of this final project includes the comparison of the performance of standard Savonius wind turbines and elliptical Savonius wind turbines with assumed condition 2D steady flow and using the k-kl omega transition and k-ω SST viscous turbulent model with variations in flow velocity and flow angle towards the rotor position. This study will be evaluated through the static torque coefficient relative to the angle position of the rotor, the pressure distribution along the blade surface and wind flow characteristics near the rotor. Numerical studies were assisted using Ansys Workbench 18 software. The results of the study showed that the modified wind turbine rotor had a higher static torque coefficient at low speeds. Both types of turbine rotors have relatively the same self-starting capability at high speeds.
