Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for English language learning is proposed. A sentence is the basic unit of written English language communication. The system creates incomplete English sentences with some variations of tenses which are generated automatically and challenges students to correct them. In this regard, ITS acts as a virtual English teacher gives quiz to the student, similar to Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test. These sentences are generated using pre-defined rules and each sentence has its own difficulty level assigned by the system. Difficulty level of each sentence is defined using Causal Bayesian Network (CBN) and the verb-object pair of sentence is composed using semantic tool. The system is able to generate a set of incomplete sentences (with corresponding complete and correct sentences) which consitutes an exam quiz with a certain level of difficulty to be presented to the students. In this paper, ITS utilises 4 (four) parameters, which define difficulty level of composed sentences in a quiz, namely “tenses”, “verb”, “type” and “word”. User of ITS may set difficulty level of an exam quiz by defining only one of parameter and the system will adjust the rest automatically using CBN. Experimental results show that ITS is able generate diffulty level of “beginner” with 13,52% error, “intermediate” with 4,30% error and “advanced” with 3,81% error.
