Abstract

Arus listrik yang mengalir pada kawat penghantar listrik dapat menimbulkan medan magnet. Ketika cahaya merambat pada medium optik yang dipengaruhi medan magnet maka sudut polarisasi cahaya akan berubah. Perubahan sudut polarisasi cahaya disebabkan oleh medan magnet, konstanta Verdet bahan dan panjang lintasan cahaya. Fenomena tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan antara lain untuk sensor arus berbasis optik. Pada tugas akhir ini telah dilakukan penelitian pengaruh arus listrik terhadap penjalaran cahaya dalam serat optik singlemode-multimode graded index-singlemode (SMS). Telah dilakukan perhitungan hubungan arus listrik dan daya keluaran serat optik SMS. Pengujian secara eksperimen dilakukan dengan cara meletakkan serat optik SMS terhadap kawat penghantar arus pada jarak tertentu. Dari hasil perhitungan diperoleh perubahan daya keluaran serat optik SMS akibat pengaruh arus listrik sebesar 0.00001 dBm untuk setiap kenaikan 1 A, sedangkan dari eksperimen diperoleh perubahan daya keluaran serat optik SMS sebesar 0.01 dBm untuk setiap kenaikan arus 1 A. Perbedaan tersebut disebabkan oleh alat pengukur daya keluaran tidak mampu membaca perubahan daya pada orde yang sangat kecil.

The flowing current in the conductor wire induces the magnetic fields. The magnetic field will affect the light propagation in an optical medium and then changes the light polarization angle. The change in light polarization angle was caused by the magnetic field, Verdet constant and the length of light. Thus, the phenomena can be applied in optical-based current sensor. In this final project, the research of magnetic field effect to light propagation in singlemode- multimode graded index-singlemode (SMS) fiber optic has been done. Theoritically, electric current and output power in an SMS fiber optic has been calculated. The experiment method is done by placing the fiber optic near the conductor wire at a certain distance. The calculation result show that the output change of SMS fiber optic due to influence of electric current is 0.00001 dBm for 1 A increment, while the experiment result show the output change of 0.01 dBm for 1 A increment. The different result from calculation and experiment is caused by optical power meter incapability in reading small orde ouput change.
