Abstract

Baterai lead-acid merupakan salah satu penyimpan energi listrik yang banyak digunakan. Disamping harganya yang relatif murah, baterai ini sangat cocok digunakan pada starter kendaraan bermotor karena dapat menghasilkan arus yang tinggi. Namun proses charge yang tidak sesuai akan menimbulkan kegagalan yang berakibat pada berkurangnya life time baterai. Kegagalankegagalan tersebut antara lain: korosi pada grid, evolusi gas, pertumbuhan grid, dan sulfation. Pada tugas akhir ini akan dilakukan studi eksperimen tentang pengaruh voltase pengisian terhadap mode kerusakan baterai valve regulated lead acid (VRLA). Dalam eksperimen ini mengunakan tiga baterai yang mempunyai kapasitas yang sama. Ketiga spesimen akan dilakukan discharge dengan voltase -2,7% open circuit potential (OCP), kemudian spesimen pertama, spesimen kedua, dan spesimen ketiga masing-masing secara beurutan akan dilakukan charge dengan voltase +3,3%OCP, +5,3%OCP, dan +7,3%OCP. Eksperimen dilakukan dengan mengunakan Autolab PGSTAT302N. Selain itu juga dilakukan uji scaning electron microschope (SEM) dan X-ray defraction (XRD) pada aktif material di elektroda negatif dan positif. Hasil analisa menunjukkan degradasi kapasitas charge terbesar pada pengujian +5,3%OCP, +7,3%OCP, dan +3,3%OCP, sedangkan degradasi kapasitas discharge terbesar pada pengujian +5,3%OCP, +3,3%OCP, dan +7,3%OCP. Salah satu indikator kerusakan baterai adalah ukuran besar butir, pengujian SEM ratarata ukuran besar butir lead sulfate paling besar pada pengujian +5,3%OCP, +3,3%OCP, dan +7,3%OCP ================================================================================================ Lead-acid battery is one of electrical energy storage that has been widely used. It is cheap andsuitable for application in a motor vehicle starter because it can produce high currents. However, unproper charging will cause failures that reduce battery life. These failures include: corrosion on the grid, gas evolution, the growth of the grid, and sulfation. In this final project, the experimental studies on the effect of voltage charging to failure mode of valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery has been performed. Three batteries with same capacity have been used in this experiment. All specimens have been discharged with a voltage of -2.7% open circuit potential (OCP) and subsequently charged with a voltage of +3.3%OCP, +5.3%OCP, and +7,3%OCP for specimen 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Battery characteristic was done in using Autolab PGSTAT302N. A microschope scanning electron (SEM) and Xray defraction (XRD) in the active material for both positive and negative electrode sides conducted. The results were showed that the degradation of charge capacity in descending order was found by testing using +5,3%OCP, +7,3%OCP, dan +3,3%OCP. In other hand, the degradation of discharge capacity in descending order was found by testing using +5,3%OCP, +3,3%OCP, dan +7,3%OCP. The large grain size indicated the batery damage. According to SEM test, the size of lead sulfate grain in descending order was found by testing using +5,3%OCP, +3,3%OCP, dan +7,3%OCP
