Abstract

Study of the Kerr effect on SMS fiber optics as a strain sensor has been carried out by simulation. The addition of the Kerr effect to the SMS optical fiber strain sensor is done by providing high intensity and doping material with a nonlinear index on multimode optical fibers. The addition of the Kerr effect to variations in the optical fiber strain sensor increases the refractive index of the optical fiber which becomes larger which can be corrected on a wavelength spectrum graph that shifts towards a smaller wavelength when the index changes in the refractive value is greater, and also increases its sensitivity as the sensor. From the analysis of statistical characteristics, the highest sensitivity of the SMS optical fiber sensor was obtained by a 6 cm multimode optical fiber of 0.001844 dBm/με. While the highest sensitivity of the strain sensor with the Kerr effect was obtained by multimode 6 cm with doping CaF2 at an intensity of 1017 W/m2 which was equal to 0.008867 dBm/με.
