Abstract

The development of composite nowadays is based on the industrial needs of high properties-lightweight materials. Fiber-reinforced composites have been developed for structural applications. These days, engineers have been successfully developed composites reinforced with two or more fibers, called hybrid composite. Carbon fiber has been widely used for composites reinforcement. Nevertheless, it has several disadvantages, such as high pricing and low toughness. Hybridization of carbon fiber could be a perfect solution for that problem. In this review, we have been analyzed previous research on mechanical properties of composites with hybrid carbon/glass, carbon/aramid, carbon/basalt, carbon/jute, and carbon/flax fibers. There are five aspects that were discussed in this review: tensile, flexural, impact, wear properties, and fractography. Based on the analysis, we have found that carbon fiber hybridization produces adverse effects on tensile properties and flexural properties. Hybridization also has a positive effect on impact properties (except for carbon/jute fibers) and improvement on wear properties for carbon/glass hybrid composites.
