Abstract

========================================================================================================
Traditional settlements in Kamal District have been identified as having elements that form defensible space currently, these elements have undergone changes. Although Kamal District tends to experience a decrease in the crime rate, the crime rate in Kamal District is the highest compared to other sub-districts in Bangkalan Regency. For this reason, this study aims to determine the embodiment of spatial factors that can withstand crime in the current Kamal District.
Researchers focus on four factors from the concept of defensible space, namely territoriality, natural surveillance, image, and milieu. This study uses a qualitative-quantitative methodology (mix-method) with a rationalistic approach. Data collection was carried out by means of questionnaires, interviews, and observations.
From the cluster analysis, it was found that there were three village clusters in Kamal District based on their level of security, namely safe villages (Tajungan, Kamal, Tanjung Jati), quite safe villages (Banyu Ajuh, Gili Anyar, Kebun), and unsafe villages. (Telang, Pendabah, Gili Barat, Gili Timur).
The findings show that the four defensible space factors have an effect on the crime rate in Kamal District. Territoriality factors (the functioning of the public space, active community associations, and high awareness of space), natural surveillance factors (good lighting, visual openness that is not obstructed by plants, and natural monitoring of the population), image factors (well-maintained impression), milieu factors (heterogeneity and accessibility) have an effect on reducing the crime rate in the study locations.
