Abstract
Biodiesel dapat diproduksi melalui proses interesterifikasi dengan mereaksikan minyak kelapa sawit dengan metil asetat menggunakan katalis kalium metoksida serta penggunaan ultrasound dan microwave untuk meningkatkan yield dan mempercepat laju reaksi. Reaksi interesterifikasi ini akan menghasilkan biodiesel dan triacetin sebagai hasil samping yang lebih memiliki nilai ekononomis sehingga tidak diperlukan proses pemisahan produk samping. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan penggunaan metode ultrasound assisted interesterification (UAI) dan metode microwave assisted interesterification (MAI) terhadap yield biodiesel, mengetahui pengaruh faktor-faktor yang meliputi rasio molar antara metil asetat terhadap minyak, konsentrasi katalis, temperatur, dan waktu dalam mempengaruhi yield dan kualitas biodiesel, melakukan optimasi dari faktor tersebut serta mempelajari kinetika reaksinya. Secara umum penelitian ini diawali dengan menyiapkan bahan baku, melakukan proses interesterifikasi minyak kelapa sawit menggunakan bantuan ultrasound atau microwave, lalu dilanjutkan proses pencucian dan diakhiri dengan menganalisis produk. Hasil yang diperoleh mengindikasikan bahwa proses UAI dan MAI memiliki potensi untuk dapat dikembangkan sebagai alternatif dalam memproduksi biodiesel. Dimana semakin tinggi rasio molar yang digunakan maka yield yang didapatkan meningkat. Sebaliknya, semakin banyak konsentrasi katalis yang digunakan maka yield yang dihasilkan menurun, kecuali pada kisaran 0,5% - 1% (w/w). Peningkatan temperatur reaksi juga dapat meningkatkan yield yang diperoleh, kecuali pada kisaran suhu 550C–650C. Sedangkan untuk waktu reaksi, 5 menit pertama menghasilkan kenaikan yield yang tertinggi. Pada metode ultrasound, diperoleh yield yang optimal pada rasio molar 15:1 dengan konsentrasi katalis 1% pada suhu 550C selama waktu reaksi 5 menit sebesar 81,26%. Sedangkan untuk metode microwave, yield tertinggi diperoleh pada rasio molar 12:1 dengan konsntrasi 1% pada suhu 500C selama waktu reaksi 10 menit sebesar 83,29%. Selanjutnya untuk kondisi operasi optimal dengan menggunakan UAI dan Box-Behnken design (BBD) adalah rasio molar metil asetat terhadap minyak 18,74:1, konsentrasi katalis 1,24%, temperatur 57,840C, dan waktu interesterifikasi 12,69 menit diperoleh yield biodiesel sebesar 98,64%. Selain itu, model kinetika menggunakan orde dua dengan memplot konversi vs waktu dan didapatkan energi aktivasi sebesar 50,5034 kJ/mol untuk metode ultrasound. Sedangkan senyawa metil ester yang terkandung dalam biodiesel terutama metil palmitat dan metil oleat. ============================================================= Biodiesel can be produced through an interesterification process by reacting palm oil with methyl acetate and a potassium methoxide catalyst using ultrasound and microwave to increase yields and accelerate the reaction rate. This interesterification reaction will produce biodiesel and triacetin as a byproduct that has more economical value so that no side product separation process is needed. This study aims to compare the use of the ultrasound-assisted interesterification (UAI) method and the microwave-assisted interesterification (MAI) method to biodiesel yields, determine the effect of factors including the molar ratio between methyl acetate to oil, catalyst concentration, temperature, and time in influencing yield and the quality of biodiesel, optimize these factors and study the kinetics of the reaction. In general, this research begins by preparing raw materials, carrying out the process of interesterification of palm oil using ultrasound or microwave, then proceed with the washing process, and ends with analyzing the product. The results obtained indicate that the UAI and MAI processes have the potential to be developed as alternatives in producing biodiesel. Where the higher the molar ratio used, the yield obtained increases. Conversely the more concentration of catalyst used, the yield decreases, except in the range of 0.5% - 1% (w/w). Increasing the reaction temperature can also increase the yield obtained, except in the temperature range of 550C–650C. As for the reaction time, the first 5 minutes resulted in the highest increase in yield. In the ultrasound method, an optimal yield is obtained at a molar ratio of 15:1 with a catalyst concentration of 1% at 550C during a 5 minute reaction time of 81.26%. As for the microwave method, the highest yield was obtained at a molar ratio of 12:1 with a concentration of 1% at 500C during a 10 minute reaction time of 83.29%. Furthermore, for optimal operating conditions using UAI and Box-Behnken design (BBD) is the molar ratio of methyl acetate to oil 18.74:1, catalyst concentration 1.24%, temperature 57.840C, and interesterification time 12.69 minutes, obtained biodiesel yield amounted to 98.64%. In addition, the kinetics model uses second-order by plotting conversion vs. Time, and the activation energy of 50.5034 kJ/mol is obtained for the ultrasound method. While the methyl ester compounds contained in biodiesel are mainly methyl palmitate and methyl oleate.
