Abstract

In the medical field, titanium is widely used to make implants such as artificial hip and knee implants, as well as equipment for repairing broken bones and equipment for performing surgery. Implant size is identified by color, particulary at the time of surgery. In surgery, time is a crucial variable where the time allocation must be optimal for each sub-activity. Thus, the identification of implant size by color helps to optimize this time. To maintain the biocompatibility of a titanium implant, the implant is colorized by anodizing process.
Color anodizing is conducted using Direct Current power supply with Ti6Al4V as anode and alumunium foil as cathode. In this experiment, two types of electrolytes were used, sulfuric acid electrolyte (20 wt% H2SO4) with a pH of 1,38 and trisodiumphospat (0,002 wt% Na3PO4) with a pH of 11,43. Nanosilver additive (0,02 wt%) was added so that the TiO2 layer formed has antimicrobial and antibacterial characteristics. Experiments were carried out for the potential difference for each varying 20 V increase (20 to 120 V). After the anodizing process, the samples were rinsed with deionized water and dried at room temperature. The color produced on the titanium surface after anodizing is known as interference colors. Where the difference in the thickness of the oxide layer will provide a color difference to the specimen. CIELab method is needed to quantify a color difference of titanium. Using the CM-700d spectrophotometer, the values for L*,a* and b* were obtained, the the chromaticity and wavelength values for each specimen were obtained. The chromaticity value shows the intensy of a color, so that the higher chromaticity value, the color can be clearly seen and identified by the human eye.
In this experimental study, it is known that the highest chromaticity value obtained with acid electrolytes is found at a voltage of 60 V which is equal to 49,40, while with base electrolytes found at 20 V which is equal to 35,98. Acid and base electrolytes give effect to the color produced in the anodizing process. By comparing the chromaticity values of the two electrolytes. Obtained at a voltage of 20 V and 40 V produced a darker color using a base electrolyte and at a voltage of 60 V and 80 V a darker color was produced using an acid electrolyte. For both acid and base electrolytes, increasing the voltage from 20 V to 80 V will increase the thickness of the oxide layer formed on titanium. Through the EDS test, it was found that the addition of 0.02 wt% nanosilver additives to acid and base electrolytes during the anodizing process did not have an effect on the formation of the titanium dioxide layer where it was expected that nanosilver particles would be embedded in the formation of the titanium dioxide layer.
