Abstract

Indonesia memiliki bahan baku rotan yang melimpah, 85% bahan baku rotan dunia berasal dari Indonesia. Namun, industri rotan domestik hanya mampu menyerap 20-30% dari total bahan baku yang dihasilkan. Industri furnitur rotan mengalami tantangan terkait daya saing terutama mulai masuknya pasar global. Salah satu hambatan dalam meningkatkan nilai jual furnitur rotan adalah struktur furnitur rotan yang tidak sekuat kayu dan daya tahan yang pendek. Peluang peningkatan nilai jual furnitur rotan masih terhambat karena desain furnitur yang dihasilkan merupakan desain konvensional dari masa ke masa, berbasis spesifikasi pada buyer, menggunakan fixed construction, volume produk besar yang berakibat pada biaya transportasi menjadi mahal dan sulit menembus pasar global.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan material rotan dengan mechanical properties rotan yang lebih baik, terutama kekakuan material. Sehingga dilakukan eksperimen treatment material rotan batang dengan injeksi resin sebagai matrik penguat material. Hasil pengujian 3 point bending menunjukan bahwa rotan hasil treatment lebih kaku dan teguh daripada rotan normal, dengan peningkatan sebesar 5 kali nilai normal. Hasil eksperimen berupa rotan resin-infusion kemudian di aplikasikan dalam kursi dengan sistem konstruksi knockdown dengan pendekatan desain kontemporer dalam rangka memenuhi kebutuhan property masyarakat urban.

Indonesia has abundant rattan raw materials, 85% of the world's rattan raw materials come from Indonesia. However, the domestic rattan industry is only able to absorb 20-30% of the total raw materials produced. The rattan furniture industry faces challenges related to competitiveness, especially in global markets. One obstacle in increasing the sale value of rattan furniture is that the structure of rattan furniture is not as strong as wood and its durability is short. Opportunities to increase the sale value of rattan furniture also still hampered because the furniture designs produced are conventional designs from time to time, based on specifications to the buyer, using fixed construction, large product volumes that cause transportation costs to be expensive and difficult to enter global market.
This study aims to obtain rattan material with a better mechanical properties, especially the material stiffness. So an experimental treatment of the rod rattan material by injection of resin as a reinforcing matrix is carried out. The results of 3 bending tests show that the processed rattan is stiffer than normal rattan, with an increase of 5 times the normal value. The results of the experiment are composite rattan which is then applied to furniture with a knockdown system construction with a contemporary design approach.
