Abstract

Peningkatan kandungan alumina menyebabkan penurunan densitas komposit.

Study of the effect of Al2O3 content on the structure and density of the ZrO2-Al2O3 composites has been carried out. In this study, a tetragonal zirconia base material was used as a matrix and gamma alumina as reinforcement. The variations in the mass composition of alumina are 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 30 wt.%, and 40 wt.%. The used zirconia be synthezised from the natural zircon sand from the Kerengpangi area of Central Kalimantan, while the alumina was supplied from commercial materials. The two ibase materials were mixed with wet milling using alcohol as a mixing medium. After being mixed, then compacted and sintered at a temperature of 1400oC. The before and after sintering samples were tested by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the formed phase. The sintered sampples were observed using SEM / EDX to determine the morphology and distribution of the elements of the composite and density test to determine the density and porosity of the composites. The XRD results of the sintered sample showed that the formed phases were monoclinic zirconia, corundum, zircon and mullite. SEM/EDX results show the presence of interfacial diffusion between zirconia and alumina which indicates the formation of composites. The increasing of alumina content causes the decreasing of composites density.
