Abstract

Biofouling is the attachment of organisms to the surface of marine facilities, such as the ship hull. These events can cause various kinds of negative impacts. Antifouling coating with biocide compounds is applied to the surface of the material to prevent biofouling. However, the biocides that are used today are harmful to marine organisms. Therefore, a biocide compound that is not harmful is needed. One of the natural compounds that have good antifouling properties is capsaicin, an active compound that comes from Capsicum sp. Capsaicin is proven to be able to prevent biofouling without giving a harmful effect. However, to meet the criteria of optimal antifouling paint, good mechanical properties are needed. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of capsaicin extracted from Capsicum chinense in an epoxy /PAA/capsaicin composite coating with a varied composition on the antifouling properties by immersion in seawater; mechanical properties by lap shear, tensile, and hardness test; and morphology using a stereomicroscope. Capsaicin was able to give antifouling properties but also decreased the mechanical properties of the coating with 0, 5, 10, 15wt% filler which respectively resulted in tensile strength of 9,93; 9,3; 5,42; 1,27 MPa, hardness of 42,3; 41,3; 36,7; 23,3 HD, and shear strength of 36,12; 11,12; 8,63; 6,4 MPa. It can be concluded that the optimum composition of the filler for epoxy/PAA/capsaicin composite is 5wt% because it was able to give good antifouling properties while maintaining good mechanical properties.
