Abstract

Blindness is a form of physical disability that often seen as negative, both in the medical sphere and society. This negative understanding is because society generally defines and treats persons with disabilities based on a mindset which is dominated by the concept of normality which led to ableism behavior. Therefore, blind and visually impaired people have to face various forms of obstacles in everyday life, one of which is from the architectural aspect. The built environment is often designed with visual elements as the main focus, causing a phenomenon called visual bias in Architecture or ocularcentrism.
The concept of a sensory cave contains a sequence narrative to form a story that can change the ableism mindset. Through the sensory cave, the building creates an experience through the spatial quality of a cave that known for its exposure to nature. Therefore, this building applies multisensory design approach as an effort to increase the awareness of sighted people about the world of blind and visually impaired people’s perceptions. The Edutainment Center building which is supported by educational and entertainment purposes, accomodates the needs of users to independently explore the meaning of a space, place, and object with minimal use of visual sensing.
