Abstract

The roro ship is a marine transportation capable of loading vehicles and passengers from one port to another. In daily use, ships rely heavily on the use of fuel oil to run the main engine, generator, emergency generator, etc. The dependence on the use of fuel oil causes the operating costs of the ship to be high, while on the other hand this pioneer shipping is not economically and business feasible. In this research, a solution is offered in the form of using solar panels as an energy source to meet the electricity needs of a trimaran ship while sailing. This research examines the use of solar panels technically and economically regarding the design of the system. The technical analysis is carried out by calculating the electrical power requirements during sailing and then calculating the total solar panels that can be applied on the Roro Trimaran ship. After that, the ship's electrical requirements were reconfigured due to the use of solar panels. Economic analysis is done by comparing the fuel consumption between conventional systems that use generators and hybrid systems that use generators, solar panels, and the calculation of the Break Even Point is carried out. From the results of this research, it is known that the total solar panel power that can be applied on a ship is 407,595 kW. From an economic point of view, the use of solar panels can save fuel consumption on a trimaran vessel by as much as 15% per year. And by calculating the investment, operational, and maintenance costs of conventional systems and hybrid systems, the break even point value is obtained after 4 years the system operates.
