Abstract

Optical fiber has been widely developed in research as a sensor by utilizing the principle of total reflection. In this study, the optical fiber type FD-620-10 was used to detect changes in pH of the solution by replacing cladding with PANI-PVA. The sensor probe is made by peeling the jacket and cladding 3 cm long, then coated with PANI-PVA. The light source and detector used in this study were BF5R-D1-N with a wavelength of 660 nm and a solution at pH = 2 to pH = 12 made with a pH up and pH down solution measured with a pH meter as an indicator. The spectrophotometer test results showed that a solution with a pH of 11 had the largest absorbance value, namely 1.6359 au, while the absorbance in a solution with a pH of 5 was 0.0609 au. PANI-PVA has the lowest absorbance value at a wavelength of 540 nm of 1.702 au. Meanwhile, the absorbance value at a wavelength of 660 nm is 2,437 au. A pH sensor using optical fiber in the form of PANI-PVA cladding has been successfully fabricated and is able to change acidic solutions at pH = 2 to pH = 7 and alkaline solutions at pH = 9 to pH = 12.
