Abstract

======================================================================================================
Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is a type of boiler that
uses a fluidized bed with sand bed and uses a recirculation loop
for greater combustion efficiency and also achieves lower
pollutant emissions. Several studies have shown that up to 95% of
pollutants can be absorbed before being released into the
atmosphere. One of the main attractions of CFB boilers is the
flexibility of the fuel, especially in the current fuel market where
prices and availability can be very different in each region. In
one part of CFB, namely water wall, damage often occurs due to
erosion. This erosion is caused by the sand contained in the flue
gas which gives an abrasive force to the tube wall. This damage
results in a decrease in boiler performance because the water
wall functions as a water evaporator. In general, this damage can
be prevented by several methods, usually by giving additional
layer at the pipe outer with coating or shield.
In this study, a three-dimensional simulation is performed
on a water wall tube with a steady and incompressible flow using
the ANSYS Fluent software. The geometry tested was a water wall
tube. Simulations were carried out with variations with and
without coating on the outside of the tube, load variations of
100% and 75% which were represented by variations in the heat
transfer coefficient of 180 W/m
2K and 150 W/m
2K on half the tube

output using the k-ϵ Realizable with enhanced wall treatment as
turbulence model. The boundary conditions used are velocity inlet,
pressure outlet, and wall for the top surface and the surface of the
object being tested. From the simulations conducted, qualitative
and quantitative data will be obtained. Qualitative data in the
form of temperature distribution contours and quantitative data
in the form of heat transfer rate values, water temperature and its
comparison graph.
The comparison between the simulation results and the
calculation results shows that the simulation is in accordance
with the theory. The result of the load variation simulation shows
that the lower the load the lower the heat transfer rate and
resulting lower water temperature. The variation with coating
resulted in the highest reduction in fluid temperature with 0.292
K (0.0485%). The simulation results with variations in protective
material show that at 100% load, the variation with coating can
increase the heat transfer rate by increasing the water
temperature by 0.021 K while the variation with the shield
decreases the heat transfer rate by decreasing the water
temperature by 0.013 K. The simulation results with variations in
the protective material show that at 75% load shows different
results where the variation with the coating and shield increases
the heat transfer rate where both of them increase the water
temperature by 0.018 K. Based on these results, coating was
chosen as the protective material chosen for this system, because
it can have better performance in both types of loads than using
shield.
